TrueCrypt is one of the best and Encryption utility used by thousands. It offers good level of security. It is almost impossible to Brute Force its password without killer processing power. The situation can’t be imagined where you locked most important documents and forgot the password. If you are not able to guess it no way it can be recovered back. You will need to say good bye to all data. Of course you need to use strong which is difficult to guess, which also makes it difficult to remember. The best way to be prepared for this type of situation is to make backup of TrueCrypt volume header, which can reset the password if you ever forgot.

TrueCrypt is the best utility to encrypt. But what if you can’t remember lot of passwords. Then just backup header of the volume, and your data is secured even from your own mind.

There is also a case like someone forgot main password and went to restore header, but also forgot its password. So first use easy to remember password and take header backup. Go to Tools and select Backup Volume Header. Save the backup into safe location. Avoid to store into same computer, try to store in any offsite location. Then change the password to a very difficult and powerful one.

Don’t be under impression that the data is 100% safe. If someone gets access to header file with its password, he can compromise it. Change the name of file in such a way that it’s impossible to identify it as header file.

June 23rd, 2012 by Admin

Internet is so vast that any information you need is just a mouse click away. Yet the technology that helps us explore and use the web also makes it easy to expose our personal information to others. Hackers and spammers often use this phenomenon to their advantage, creating malicious websites, that when visited, can track your browsing habits, steal your passwords and credit card information, or can infect your computer with malicious softwares such as Viruses, Worms and Trojans.

The easiest way to protect ourselves or our family members from accessing such dangerous websites is to block them altogether. There are actually many softwares available on the internet which are pretty good in blocking websites on your computer, but they cost money and are sometimes difficult to operate.

In this article I will show you how to block unsafe websites on your Windows PC without investing in any additional software.

Note : Blocking harmful websites is not a complete security solution. It is still recommended that you run anti-virus software on your computer and be careful of the websites you visit.

How to Block A Website without Using Any Software:

1. Run Notepad as Administrator : For this go to Start  > All Programs > Accessories, right-click Notepad and select Run as administrator.

Note : If you are prompted for an administrator password or for a confirmation, type the password, or click Allow or Yes.

2. Within Notepad go to File > Open and select  All Files from the drop-down menu present near the bottom right corner of the window (check the screenshot).

3. Now type the following text in the File name field and click Open:

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc\hosts

5.  The hosts file will open up. Go to the last line of the file and press the Enter key. Type 127.0.0.1 followed by the address of the website that you wish to block. For example, to block facebook.com, type :

Never add http:// at the start of the URL. Doing so will make the entry invalid. Also note that writing www is optional.

6. To block more websites, type 127.0.0.1 followed by the website address in every new line. You can block as many websites as you like.

7. Save and close the file.

Thats it! Now try to access the offending site(s) from your Web Browser. You’ll see that those specific website(s) will no longer be accessible.

In case you wish to undo the changes, follow Step 1-3 and delete the lines you had typed. You will again be able to open those sites.

Windows won’t Start with Error “NTLDR is missing”

June 19th, 2012 by Admin

Every once in a while I note, in the forums where I participate, series of questions that appear over and over again. So is the case with the “NTLDR is Missing. Press any Key to Restart” error when the user attempts to boot their system.

What’s NTLDR?

NTLDR is short for NT loader – a program loaded from the hard drive boot sector that displays the Microsoft Windows NT startup menu and helps Microsoft Windows NT load. So when it goes missing for some reason, your windows cannot load. I use Windows XP on a Pentium 4 PC. Though it seemed common on a routine google search, it was not so easy to fix and many forums reported that formatting hard drive was the last solution eventually.

Fix the Error of NTLDR is missing

First please check if your system is trying to boot from a CD or USB stick. Remove the CD and USB stick and try again.  If your computer still throws the same error message at startup, please follow these steps to fix or repair the problem so your system should boot up properly.

  1. Insert your Windows installation DVD into the computer.
  2. When prompted to press any key to boot from the CD, press any key.
  3. Once in the Windows setup menu, press the R key to repair Windows.
  4. Log into your Windows installation by pressing the 1 key and pressing Enter.
  5. You will then be prompted for your administrator password, enter that password.
  6. Copy the below two files to the root directory of your Windows installation.  For example, my system drive is C:\ and the CD-ROM drive is E:\. Type the following command to copy the missing files from CD-ROM to your system drive:
    copy e:\i386\ntldr c:\
    copy e:\i386\ntdetect.com c:\
  7. Once both of these files have been successfully copied, remove the CD from the computer and reboot.

The trick can be used to fix the NTLDR errors with Windows XP/2003/2000/Me. Windows 8, Windows 7, and Windows Vista utilize BOOTMGR, not NTLDR.
